For over 80 years, M.W. Crowson Insurance Agency has been serving Alamance County and beyond as an independent agency. In 1938, M.W. (Mort) Crowson, established the agency in the second floor of the old National Bank building, now the home of the Burlington Depot Amphitheater. For the past 46 years, 225 E. Davis Street has been the location for the family business.
Mort’s wife, Mary Lou Crowson, joined the agency as business manager and agent in the late 1940s, making her one of the first women licensed as an agent in North Carolina. After Mr. Crowson’s death in 1979, Mrs. Crowson brought in her daughter Margaret Skinner and nephew Bill Lasley and later her grandson, Holt Skinner, as producers. Today, the principal agent is Holt Skinner, son of Margaret Skinner and grandson of the Crowson's.
Holt has worked at the agency since he was a teenager, answering the phone and performing various clerical tasks. He prides himself on maintaining the personal touch that his grandfather, Mr. Crowson, felt was imperative in a service business. Crowson Insurance Agency strives to provide the best coverage at the most affordable rates, supported by the most professional customer service. Holt proclaims, “we are now insuring grandchildren and great- grandchildren of our existing policyholders,” revealing how the agency still remains grounded in its roots since 1938.
